Sunkariba was a nyancho, a member of the warrior prince clan who ruled the Mandinka kingdom of Kabu until the late 19th century. The song praises his bravery and generosity with his musicians. It also advises people to share: "Ali b’aa domo la, m b’ali fele la, ni ntele mu, n s’ali so (You are eating and I am watching you; If I were you, I would share)." The beautiful strumming of the high strings, called batoto, is said to imitate the sound of a mythical bird from Mali.
this is one of the most beautiful collections of music I've heard in a very long time. every song draws your attention - don't plan on doing anything else while you listen. more please 🙏 kimmcb
