This song, in their inimitable Casamance style, is an affectionate tribute to a local marabout or Muslim cleric/ spiritual adviser/ healer. Kairaba Jabi is the son of another famous marabout, Kammadiba Jabi (himself the subject of another of Dembo & Kausu’s songs, Madiba Jabi, featured on their Jali Roll album).
Islam came to Casamance in the 19th century, brought by invading Muslim cleric/warriors, and soon locally grown spritual leaders were able to interpret the zealous messages of the koran in ways more suitable to local culture. These marabouts knew that the jalis had to be on their side, since jalis were their best form of publicity. The marabouts gave generously, and the jalis composed praise songs for them which spread their names in the region. To this day jalis and marabouts maintain a close association, since they are both concerned with maintaining traditional values such as love for families and for hereditary jobs such as jaliya.
"We’re united in a single purpose. We love our families and our profession. We have constant thoughts for Kairaba Jabi. If you give to jalis you will receive the grace of God."
this is one of the most beautiful collections of music I've heard in a very long time. every song draws your attention - don't plan on doing anything else while you listen. more please 🙏 kimmcb
