We've unearthed a box of mint, shrinkwrapped copies of the1993 compilation CD There's A Griot Going On, an invigorating assortment from the small, intrepid world of Rogue Records. Rogue was one of the more determinedly individual independents to emerge in the very dawning of the roots and world music upsurge of the '80s, and celebrated their 10th birthday with this collection from their unique mix of artists. There's A Griot Going On has a 70 minute playing time, with nearly half the tracks either specially recorded, re-mixed or first time on CD at the time of its release.

One of Rogue's main activities was first issuing records in Britain by world music artists that they thought warranted a wider hearing – names as diverse as kora masters Dembo Konte & Kausu Kuyateh, Senegalese singer Baaba Maal, Tex-Mex accordeon legend Flaco Jimenez, Casamance guitar king Pascal Diatta with Sona Mané, the U.K.'s best African band Abdul Tee-Jay's Rokoto, and Madagascar's Tarika Sammy, Jaojoby and Freddy De Majunga, for example. But in fact its original function was to provide an independent outlet for the group and individual works of a small circle of English roots musicians centred around Maggie Holland, Ian Anderson and Rod Stradling. When Rogue Records started, they were in an outfit called The English Country Blues Band that was about to become a noisy roots dance band called Tiger Moth and eventually its worldly offshoot, Orchestre Super Moth.
